My Final Experience as a WPPI Speaker

What a ride.  Since 2004, I have attended the annual WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International) convention, pretty religiously.  2015 marks my final year as a speaker, for reasons that will become apparent later in this post, and this is a love-letter to those years, and the industry that spawned them. I also want to … Read moreMy Final Experience as a WPPI Speaker

Holy Crap ! It Finally Happened.

Strap in, I’ve got some BIG news… first, some history:    I began “coaching” (a term I use to metaphorically describe everything from standing on the sidelines and sending in plays to leading the team actively right from the game floor) almost 30 years ago, when I stumbled onto the concept of Specialism. I was compelled … Read moreHoly Crap ! It Finally Happened.

Your Magic Isn’t In What You Do

I’ve studied close-up magic since I was 10 years old and imagined myself with a career as a professional magician for many of my early years. I also learned at the direction of some of the world’s most famous and talented magicians during my wonder years.  The really important stuff  they taught me had little to do with this…

Are You Worth More Than Your Images?

Over the last few years, I’ve noticed that many (though not all) of the professional photographers act as if the images they capture are their “babies” and therefore want to “protect and keep them safe” from harm/change, like Instagram filters or Costco printing. This ownership mentality probably made sense in the days of film photography … Read moreAre You Worth More Than Your Images?

At one place I remember well, they saw themselves as innovative and edgy – but scratching the surface a little revealed the common advice from everyone who worked there about how to survive in such a place was “Don’t Make Waves.” Not really a great formula for growing success, IMHO. At best, this creates an environment of conservative apathy. At worst, it creates a place where there’s no real accountability and survivors do a lot of shrugging, on a daily basis.

Would You Trust Me with a Kid If You Knew I Was a Jailbird?

On the internet, we KNOW that everything (bad) lasts forever… we all get this, even if we deny it (which is usually right after a few late-night drunkposts).  I’ve recently learned that the internet is not alone in this characteristic of unfortunate recall. My tale has a few simple highlights: I was arrested. It was for … Read moreWould You Trust Me with a Kid If You Knew I Was a Jailbird?

Wow. I Really Thought You Loved Me.

I’m pretty thrilled that I get more than my share of happy wishes these days – most of which are in email.  Honestly, I don’t have any issue with getting personal messages through a (relatively) impersonal medium… I love that my friends even think about me during their day. And, all this thinking about public, private, personal, … Read moreWow. I Really Thought You Loved Me.
